Map Viewer web map compatibility

ArcGIS Enterprise offers two map viewers for viewing, using, and creating maps. The new Map Viewer (which was formerly available as a separate, beta installation) or Map Viewer Classic (formerly known as Map Viewer) can be configured as the primary map viewer for your organization and for individual members.

The compatibility guide and functionality matrix below outline common workflows and tools that are available in both map viewers. The expected behavior of specific functionality in Map Viewer and Map Viewer Classic is described.

Forward and backward compatibility

To create production-ready web maps with new features, you can open maps created in Map Viewer in Map Viewer Classic, and vice versa. This provides flexibility in how you author your maps. There are differences in functionality between the two map viewers, and it is recommended that you ensure that new functionality, such as dot density maps, can be viewed. Both Map Viewer Classic and Map Viewer provide notifications of these circumstances. In most cases, the unsupported content doesn't appear. It is recommended that you use the Save as option when saving web maps that are authored in both Map Viewer Classic and Map Viewer. To help you determine which map viewer to use, see the FAQ. For more specific information about what is supported in each map viewer, see the compatibility matrix below.

StatusDefinition

Full support

Full functionality—including saving, authoring, and modifying—is available.

Example: Adding and symbolizing feature layers in Map Viewer is supported.

No support

The capability is not supported in the specified map viewer. There is no authoring support, and you cannot view the capability saved in a web map.

Example: Related records can be viewed and configured in Map Viewer Classic only; they cannot be viewed or configured in Map Viewer yet.

Partial: limited layer authoring

Layers of a specific type are partially supported. You can add layers to the map when they are authored in Map Viewer Classic and modify basic properties such as transparency, scale range, and ordering in Map Viewer. However, you cannot change the style of the layer, modify pop-ups, or configure other properties for these layer types.

Example: In Map Viewer, you can open a map created in Map Viewer Classic that contains a streaming feature layer. You can then modify the layer's transparency and other basic properties in Map Viewer, but other configuration options, such as pop-up configuration and styling, are only available in Map Viewer Classic.
