Manage KML settings

When publishing map image layers, you have can enable the Keyhole Markup Language (KML) capability to serve KML dynamically over the web. KML operations and properties can be configured from the Settings tab of a KML-enabled map image layer's item details page.

Configure KML operations

KML services have built-in operations that allow KML clients to perform various requests on the server.

To configure these operations, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to the organization as the item owner with publishing privileges or an administrator.
2. Open the item details page for the map image layer with KML enabled.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Scroll to the KML section and expand the Configuration heading.

   Under Operations, the Single Image, Separate Images, and Vectors operations are turned on by default.

   Single Image	Allow KML clients to request a single composite image as a KML ground overlay for all the layers in a service. This is similar to the export map image operation for map services.
   Separate Images	Allows KML clients to make a request that will return a separate image, such as a KML ground overlay, for each layer in the service. For example, if you were viewing a KML service through a KML client, you could adjust the transparency of each layer in the service.
   Vectors	Allows KML clients to make a request that will return individual features from all supported layers as their respected geometry type. This can include points, lines, and polygons.

5. Optionally, uncheck the Single Image, Separate Images or Vectors boxes to turn off these operations.
6. Click Save.

   The edits are applied immediately.

Configure network link options

A network link has several properties that you can define. Some of these properties can be configured from the portal.

To manage network link options from the portal, follow these steps:

1. Sign in to the organization as the item owner with publishing privileges or an administrator.
2. Open the item details page for the map image layer with KML enabled.
3. Click the Settings tab.
4. Scroll to the KML section and expand the Configuration heading.
5. Under Properties, choose a KML compatibility mode.
6. Populate or modify the following options:

   Property	Description
   Limit Number of Features Returned To	Specify a limit to the number of features to return. The default is 1,000,000.
   Image Size	Specify the size of the image returned by the KML service. The default is 1024.
   Client DPI	Specify the DPI of the client screen to aid in the determination of the map scale for a request. The default is 96.
   Use Default Snippets	Enable or disable the use of default snippets.
   Use Network Link Control Tag	Enable or disable the use of the network link control tag.
   Minimum Refresh Period	Specify the time interval during which requests to refresh the data from the same client will be ignored.
   Link Name	Specify the name of your network link. The name you enter is used as the file name and is embedded in the Name tag of your network link file.
   Link Description	Provide a description of your network link. This text will appear when a user clicks the network link in a KML client.
   One Time Message	Specify a one time message. This text will appear in a pop-up the first time a client accesses the service.

7. Click Save.

   The edits are applied immediately.
