Publish a hosted scene layer to your organization using one of the following methods:
- Add LAS data to a scene in ArcGIS Pro and publish.
- Create a scene layer package (SLPK), add it to your content in the portal, and publish.
Note:
Only I3S version 1.7 and later scene layer packages are supported. If your package is 1.6 or earlier, convert it to a supported version using the converter tool found in the I3S GitHub repository.
Hosted scene layers contain a cache to support rapid visualization of the data.
When you publish from ArcGIS Pro or a scene layer package, the SLPK file is added as an item in your content. Once you confirm that the scene layer functions, you can delete the scene layer package from the portal to save space on the portal machines, but only if you are certain you no longer need the scene layer package.
Publish from an ArcGIS Pro scene
Add LAS data layers to a scene in ArcGIS Pro, configure the scene, and publish (share). This creates a hosted scene layer in the portal to which you publish.
Before you publish, be sure you are signed in to your portal from ArcGIS Pro and the portal connection is active. Your portal account must also belong to a role that has the following privileges:
- Create content.
- Publish hosted scene layers.

Publish from a scene layer package
A scene layer package contains a scene layer and its data. You can create a scene layer package (SLPK) in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Drone2Map, or ArcGIS CityEngine. ArcGIS Pro 2.3 and later releases allow you to package Revit data, upload the scene layer package to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal, and publish a building scene layer.

Esri continues to improve the usability of scene layers. ArcGIS Pro 2.4, Scene Viewer, and apps built using the 4.12 ArcGIS API for JavaScript consume version 1.7 and earlier releases of the indexed 3D scene layer (I3S) model for integrated mesh and 3D object scene layers. I3S version 1.7 provides better performance and scalability than previous versions.
To take advantage of these improvements, the Create 3D Object Scene Layer Package geoprocessing tool now creates I3S version 1.7 scene layer packages. You can update existing integrated mesh and 3D object scene layer packages to version 1.7 using the I3S converter, which is available in the I3S GitHub repository. The I3S converter also identifies the I3S version of your existing scene layer packages, allowing you to determine if you need to convert them.

How you add the package to your organization depends on the size of the scene layer package.
Scene layer package file size is 500 GB or greater
If your scene layer package file size is 500 GB or greater, you may encounter issues uploading the package in your browser. In this case, run the Share Package geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro to add the scene layer package to your organization.
After you run the Share Package tool to add the package to your organization, you can proceed with publishing a scene layer as described in the following steps:
- Sign in to your organization and click Content > My Content.
- Click your scene layer package to display its item details page and click Publish.
- Type a title that describes the scene layer.
- If your organization administrator configured content categories, click Assign Category and select up to 20 categories to help people find your item. You can also type in the Filter categories box to narrow the list of categories.
- Optionally, type tag terms separated by commas.
Tags are words or short phrases that describe your item and help people find your item when searching. Federal land is considered one tag, while Federal,land is considered two tags.
- Click Publish.
Scene layer package is smaller than 500 GB
If you have a scene layer package that is smaller than 500 GB, you can add it to your organization from your local drive and publish a hosted scene layer:
- Sign in to your organization and click Content > My Content.
- Click New item > Your device.
- Choose the scene layer package on your computer.
- Choose Add scene package and create a hosted feature scene layer.
- Click Next.
- Type a title that describes the scene layer.
- If your organization administrator configured content categories, click Assign categories and select up to 20 categories to help people find your item. You can also start typing a category name to narrow the list of categories.
- Optionally, type tag terms separated by commas.
Tags are words or short phrases that describe your item and help people find your item when searching. Federal land is considered one tag, while Federal,land is considered two tags.
- Click Save.
