View analysis history

Analysis history tracks analysis runs in a web map, including successful and unsuccessful runs. You can view detailed information about each analysis run and reopen the analysis with the same settings you previously used. You can use analysis history to troubleshoot errors, reopen tools with the settings used in a previous run, and document or share your analysis workflow. The analysis history is visible to users who view a shared web map.

When you run a tool in a web map, an entry is added in the Analysis pane under History.

History entries

Each history entry maintains detailed information about the analysis run, including the following:

  • The input, output, and other parameter settings.
  • Any environment settings.
  • When the analysis was run, when the analysis finished running, and how long it took to run.
  • The run ID. This is a unique identifier for each analysis run.
  • Whether the analysis completed successfully or failed.
    Note:

    The status of an analysis run is saved when you save a web map. If you last saved a web map and the analysis is still running, you won't see an updated status the next time you open the map.

  • Any information, warning, or error messages.
  • Links to created items.

Cancel the analysis

Complete the following steps to cancel analysis that is still running:

  1. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Analysis Analysis.
  2. Click History History.
  3. Click Cancel Cancel analysis.

    A dialog box appears asking you to confirm the cancellation.

  4. If you are sure you want to cancel, click Cancel analysis. To continue with the analysis, click Keep running.

Not all analysis can be canceled. Analysis that cannot be canceled will have an information icon Information instead of a cancel button.

Manage history

If you open a saved web map at a later time to continue your work, the analysis that you previously ran in the project will be available in the analysis history. You can complete the following operations on any analysis history item:

View analysis details

The analysis details store information about each analysis run, including the result layer created from a successful run, messages that can be used to troubleshoot errors, and a summary of the analysis parameters.

Complete the following steps to view the analysis details:

  1. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Analysis Analysis.
  2. Click History History.

    All successful and unsuccessful analysis runs from the web map are listed. You can learn more about an individual analysis run.

  3. Click Options.
  4. Click View details.

    For successful analysis runs, the analysis details open on the Results tab. For runs that failed or were canceled, the analysis details open on the Messages tab.

  5. Click the Results tab.

    The Results tab displays the result layer from the selected analysis run. You can optionally use the Results tab to zoom to the result layer or open the result table, add the layer or table to the map, or open the item page.

  6. Click the Messages tab.

    The Messages tab provides information on when the analysis was run, the run time, the number of credits consumed for successful runs, and error messages for unsuccessful runs.

  7. Click the Parameters tab.

    The Parameters tab provides a summary of the configurations used to run the analysis.

Some input parameter values may not appear exactly as they appear in the tool pane, such as the following:

  • If you use a processing extent from another layer, you will not see the layer URL. Instead you will see the extent values for the layer that was specified.
  • If you use a processing extent derived from the display extent, you will see the extent values from the display extent at the time the analysis was run.
  • If you use an output spatial reference from another layer, you will not see the layer URL. Instead you will see the spatial reference for the layer that was specified.
  • Some parameters may show a JSON or list representation of the input values.

Reopen analysis runs

Complete the following steps to reopen an analysis run:

  1. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Analysis Analysis.
  2. Click History History.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click Open tool.

The tool pane appears with the configurations used when the analysis was run.

Note:

You must provide a new output name to rerun the tool.

If you open a tool that had a filter applied to an input layer, the filter will not be honored when you rerun the analysis. Analysis only honors the filter that is currently applied to the layer in the map.

If a map has been shared with you and you don't have the privileges or license required to rerun a tool, you won't be able to reopen it from the analysis history. Similarly, some tools have parameters that require specific privileges or licenses to run them. You can reopen these tools, but the parameter will be set to a value that you have privileges for.

Remove analysis runs

Complete the following steps to remove an analysis run from the analysis history:

  1. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Analysis Analysis.
  2. Click History History.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Click Remove.

The analysis run is removed from the analysis history.

Save your history

History is saved when you save a web map. History is only saved for analysis runs in Map Viewer, and cannot be opened in Map Viewer Classic. Similarly, analysis run in Map Viewer Classic will not be saved in history. To reopen any analysis runs completed in Map Viewer Classic, use the rerun option.

If you save your map while analysis is running, the status for that analysis run will be saved as in progress. To avoid having erroneous states, save your map once the analysis run has completed.

Share your analysis

When you save a web map, the history is saved with it. When you share a web map with history, users can view details of the history and reopen parameters.

If you share a web map with everyone, the history can be viewed by users outside of your organization.

If you don't have the privileges or license required to run a tool, you won't be able to reopen it.

Some tools have parameters that require specific privileges or licenses to run them. You can reopen these tools, but the parameter will be set to a value that you have privileges for.
