Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses

The ArcGIS Pro application allows you to create and work with spatial data on your desktop. It provides tools to visualize, analyze, compile, and share your data in 2D and 3D environments.

You have the following options for licensing ArcGIS Pro:

  • Provision named-user licenses to ArcGIS Enterprise members.
  • Provision named-user licenses to members of an ArcGIS Online organization.
  • Implement concurrent-use licenses using License Manager Server.
  • Use a single-use license.

Note:

Once your ArcGIS Pro installation has been licensed using any of these methods, you can connect to other portals from ArcGIS Pro.

This topic covers the first licensing option: provisioning named-user licenses to organization members.

As an administrator of an ArcGIS Enterprise organization that will provision ArcGIS Pro licenses to members, you need to do the following:

  • Purchase and download a license file through My Esri.
  • Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses with your organization's ArcGIS License Server Administrator.
  • Provision ArcGIS Pro licenses to members of your ArcGIS Enterprise organization through the portal.

Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses for your organization

Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses using the following steps. The portal you specify to manage licenses is known as the licensing portal. This is important, as ArcGIS Pro connects to this portal to obtain licensing information for members of your organization. If your organization has multiple portals, ensure the portal you specify is the one you want to use to manage licenses. Only one portal can use ArcGIS License Server Administrator; you cannot configure multiple licensing portals. You can optionally configure the portal with a backup ArcGIS License Server Administrator.

  1. If you haven't done so already, review the ArcGIS License Manager system requirements and install the software.

    This table shows the supported versions of ArcGIS License Manager to enable named user licensing for ArcGIS Pro with ArcGIS Enterprise.

  2. Open ArcGIS License Server Administrator and start the license service if it's not running. Click the Authorization tab.
  3. Select Named User from the Version drop-down menu and click Authorize Now.
  4. Select I have received an authorization file from Esri and am now ready to finish the authorization process and browse to the license (.json) file that is used to license your portal. Click Open.
  5. Click Next.

    A dialog box appears, indicating that the named user licenses have been applied.

  6. Click OK.

    A dialog box may appear for a few seconds, indicating that the licenses are being read again.

  7. Click the Availability tab and select Named User from the drop-down menu. Confirm that your expected authorizations appear.

    The totals listed will be three times the actual number of named users. This is because each named user is allowed to have three simultaneous ArcGIS Pro sessions open.

  8. Click OK and close ArcGIS License Server Administrator.
  9. If you need to update ArcGIS License Manager, open a web browser and sign in to the ArcGIS Enterprise Administrator API as a member of the default administrator role in your organization.

    The URL is formatted as https://organization.example.com/<context>/admin.

  10. Click Home > Organizations > [Organization ID] > License > Update License Manager.
  11. Browse to Home > License > Update License Manager.
  12. In the License Manager Info field, specify the host name of the ArcGIS License Server Administrator machine.

Your organization is now configured with ArcGIS Pro licenses.

Provision ArcGIS Pro licenses in the ArcGIS Enterprise portal

Once you configure ArcGIS Pro licenses for your organization, assign ArcGIS Pro licenses to yourself and organization members. See Manage licenses for full instructions. After you provision licenses, members can connect ArcGIS Pro to the licensing portal as described below.

License:

You can only provision ArcGIS Pro licenses to portal members with a compatible user type.

Organizations requiring more control over offline usage of ArcGIS Pro can prevent all ArcGIS Pro licenses in the organization from being taken offline. To do this for your organization, an administrator or a member with licensing privileges must check the Disable offline usage of ArcGIS Pro check box at the top of the ArcGIS Pro tab. ArcGIS Pro users who are already working offline when this box is checked will be allowed to check back in, but any future attempts to take an ArcGIS Pro license offline will generate an error.

Connect to the licensing portal in ArcGIS Pro

Connect ArcGIS Pro to your licensing portal. The licensing portal controls software authorizations for each member account in the portal. If your organization has multiple portals, ensure the portal is the one you configured to manage licenses.

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro.
  2. At the bottom of the ArcGIS Sign In page, click Configure your licensing options.
    Note:

    If you bypass the ArcGIS Sign In page, click Settings in the lower left corner of the ArcGIS Pro start page. On the Settings page, click Licensing on the left and click Configure your licensing options.

  3. Select ArcGIS Enterprise and enter the URL of the licensing portal.

    The URL is formatted as https://webadaptorhost.domain.com/webadaptorname. ArcGIS Pro must have access to the licensing portal and the ArcGIS License Manager machine where the licenses have been authorized.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Enter your credentials and click Sign In.

ArcGIS Pro is now connected to the licensing portal. ArcGIS Pro continues to connect to the licensing portal during each startup. You can change the licensing portal by following the steps above.

If you're working in ArcGIS Pro but see a Not signed in indication in the corner of the application, you may need to sign in to the portal containing your content to be able to browse and share files. You can view the available portals by clicking the Project tab and selecting Portals. To connect to a different portal, right-click the portal's URL and select Set As Active Portal. You can also add another portal by clicking Add Portal.

Configure a backup ArcGIS License Server Administrator

Optionally, you can configure a backup ArcGIS License Server Administrator for your licensing portal. For example, if the primary ArcGIS License Server Administrator goes offline, the portal will failover to the backup license server you specify. This allows you to minimize downtime in your organization.

  1. Complete steps 1 through 7 as described in the Configure ArcGIS Pro licenses for your organization section above. Make sure you specify the same ArcGIS Pro provisioning information.
  2. Open a web browser and sign in to the ArcGIS Enterprise Administrator API as a member of the default administrator role in your organization.

    The URL is formatted as https://organization.example.com/<context>/admin.

  3. Click Home > Organizations > [Organization ID] > License > Update License Manager.
  4. In the License Manager Info field, specify the host name of the backup ArcGIS License Server Administrator (for example, backuplm.domain.com):

Distribute ArcGIS Pro through the ArcGIS Enterprise portal

You can create a portal application item for the ArcGIS Pro installation files so members licensed to use ArcGIS Pro can install.

Make ArcGIS Pro installation available through a URL

Deploy the ArcGIS Pro installation files to a web server.

  1. Download the ArcGIS Pro installation files from My Esri.
  2. Host the ArcGIS Pro self-extracting .exe installation file on a web server.

    This provides you with the URL needed to add an application item.

Create a group

Create a group and invite or add members of your organization to the group.

  1. Sign in to your portal.
  2. Create a group.
  3. Invite or add all members who you want to access and install ArcGIS Pro.

    This would be any members who are licensed to use ArcGIS Pro.

Add and share an ArcGIS Pro application item

Add an application item to the portal that points to the ArcGIS Pro URL. Share the application item with the group you created.

  1. Click the My Content tab of the content page.
  2. Click Add Item.
  3. On the Add Item dialog box, choose An application from the drop-down list.
  4. Choose Application.
  5. Type a title for the item; for example, ArcGIS Pro.
  6. Type tags that will help your members find the item.
  7. Click Add Item.

    The item details page for the item opens.

  8. Click Share and choose the group you created for sharing the installation files.
  9. Click OK to close the Share dialog box.
  10. Click Edit and update the item.
  11. Type a short description of the installation item in the Summary field.
  12. Type a more detailed description and create a link to the installation file in the Description field.
    1. Click the Create Link button in the Description field.
    2. On the Link Properties dialog box, type or paste the URL to the ArcGIS Pro file. For example, type http://webserver.domain.com/ArcGISPro/ArcGISPro.exe.
    3. Type descriptive text for the link, such as Download ArcGIS Pro installation.
    4. Click Set to create the link.
  13. Type information about who can use this application in the Access and Use Constraints field.
  14. Click Unregister App in the App Registration section.
  15. Type the URL to the installation file in the URL field in the Properties section.
  16. Click Save.

The ArcGIS Pro installation file is now available to all members of the group with which you shared it.

ArcGIS Enterprise members can sign in and search for the application item or access the item from the group. They can then download the installation file to their local machine and install ArcGIS Pro.
