Export and import group content

If you are a member of the default Administrator role, you can export items shared with a group to an export package (.epk) and use the package to import the items into groups in the same or different organizations. Exporting and importing group content can be effective for the following:

  • Migrating content across isolated environments, such as from development to staging to production or across disconnected environments
  • Creating backups of a subset of content and restoring from those backups

Export group content

You can export any or all supported items shared with a group. For a list of supported item types, see What group items can you export.

When exporting items, keep the following in mind:

  • If an item depends on other items that aren't shared with the group, you must share those items with the group and include them in the export package. For example, when exporting a web map containing a feature layer, you must also share the layer with the group and include it in the export package.
  • Item IDs are maintained during an export, which preserves the relationship between items and their dependencies.
  • URLs added directly to a web map or web app will continue to reference the source item.
  • All item and sublayer metadata is included when exporting items.
  • Each item you export can be a maximum size of 1 GB, and the export package must be smaller than 5 GB.
  • The portal content store must have a minimum of 10 GB of free disk space.

To export group content, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in as a member of the default Administrator role.
  2. Click Groups at the top of the site, and use the tabs, filters, sort options, and search as needed to find the group whose content you want to export.
  3. Click View details to open the group page.
  4. Click the Content tab.
  5. Find and select one or more items to export.
  6. Click Export Items.
  7. Provide a title and choose a folder in My Content where you want to save the export package.
  8. Click Export to package.

The export package appears as an item on the My Content tab of the Content page. The result of running the export is saved to the item description on the Overview tab of the item page.

  9. You can download the package and share it with other organizations.

Import group content

You can use an export package added as an item in your organization to import content into groups.

When importing items, keep the following in mind:

  • You can only import content to organizations using the same version or a later version of ArcGIS Enterprise than the organization where the export package was created.
  • If an item depends on other items that aren't included in the export package and don't exist in the group you want to import into, you must also import those items.
  • Item IDs are maintained during an import, which preserves the relationship between items and their dependencies.
  • URLs added directly to a web map or web app will reference the source item.
  • All item and sublayer metadata is included when importing items.
  • If an item you want to import already exists in the group, you can overwrite it.
  • The portal content store must have a minimum of 10 GB of free disk space.

To import items using an export package, you must first add the package as an item in your organization by completing the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in as a member of the default Administrator role.
  2. Click the My Content tab of the Content page, and click New item.
  3. Click Your device, browse to the location of the package on your local machine or a directory on a network share, and click Open.

Alternatively, drag the package into the drop zone at the top of the New item window.

  4. Provide a title.
  5. Choose a folder in My Content where you want to save the package.
  6. Optionally, provide tags and a summary that describes the package.
  7. Click Save.

To import content into groups after adding an export package as an item, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in as a member of the default Administrator role.
  2. On the My Content tab of the Content page, open the folder than contains the package.
  3. Click the package name to open the item page.
  4. Click Import to group.
  5. Choose the group into which you want to import the content and click Next.
  6. Select the items you want to import into the group and click Next.
  7. If an item already exists in the group and you want to overwrite it with the item in the export package, click Overwrite all items.
    Note:

When overwriting an item, no changes are made to its ownership or folder.

    Tip:

If you do not want to overwrite all items, return to the previous step and select only those you want to overwrite.

  8. Click Import.

The items appear on the group's Content tab.
